HNEKKJA
(-ta, -tr), v.
1) to drive back, with dat. (síðan lét Egill hnekkja nautunum út á mýrar);
hnekkja e-m frá, to repel, repulse;
2) to check, thwart, prevent;
hnekkja för sinni, to halt and go back again;
hnekkja vándu ráði, to prevent an evil deed;
3) to fall back, withdraw (hnekkja Írar nú frá).

II. to fall back, hobble back; hann féll eigi við höggit ok hnekti þá í mot þeim, Gullþ. 29, Landn. 153 (of one maimed in battle); hnekkja Írar nú frá, Ld. 78, Sturl. iii. 205: part. hnektr, abashed, checked; h. ok lútr, 656 B. 1.
